Why do we have such trepidation with labeling ourselves “Artist?” This is a question Crista Cloutier addresses in our fourth most read Creative Spirit interview on Artist Strong.
This fear of the label, and fully embracing our desire to be working creatives, is why Crista created her program The Working Artist. Her aim? To support people with her art industry expertise and offer artists the tools to start selling and promoting their work. As a student of her course I can tell you it’s worth it’s weight in gold!
My favorite quote from the interview:
“I just keep showing up to work and if I’m not feeling it, I do the work anyway.” (Click to Tweet)
Art schools offer technical training, but rarely offer artists the business training that should supplement our creative process. We must be our own business people if we want to succeed in selling our art. The Working Artist offers us the resources to do exactly that: become our own best champion.
I caught up with Crista recently and she had some lovely news to share:
“I launched The Working Artist in October. Since then I’ve been excitedly watching the progress of an incredible group of artists as they learn, grow, question, share and support. Every day feels like Christmas as I watch their progress.
I’m so happy with the response to the program that I’ve decided to offer The Working Artist again at the start of the year. But between now and then I’ll be traveling a lot as I work with artists in London, France, New York, Seattle, and Phoenix. I should be exhausted but instead I feel exhilarated!
I remember when I first had the idea of creating this workshop online. It felt so scary, so much work, so far away from anything I had done, but I just kept putting one foot in front of the other. And I’ve learned that things happen when we dance with life. One foot, then the next. Keep going!”
Take the time to read Crista’s interview today. Even if you’ve read it once, it’s amazing what new insights some space and new perspective can be discovered when you reread content.
