Do you ever struggle to come up with new ideas for your art?
Hi my name is Carrie Brummer and I created Artist Strong to help people like you build your skill and develop your unique artist voice. Today I want to give you something in the spirit of community, connection, and to fight against scarcity thinking so many artists experience (myself included).
If I have a superpower it is idea generation. When I talk to someone about art, my brain is flooded with visuals, and random series I could investigate in my art, or ideas for other artists. Lots of the ideas are not even relevant with the art I currently create! It’s one reason I keep journals: to help me store ideas.
This year however I found a way to digitally store my ideas and as they’ve collected digital dust I’m reminded of artists who claim people have stolen their ideas, or who feel very possessive over their ideas. I sincerely believe Austin Kleon of Steal Like an Artist has it right: we don’t exist in a vacuum and our ideas are influenced by the art we see and the world we live in.
When we make art that has true voice, even if someone else has a similar idea, people can still see your work and know it’s yours.
So in the spirit of sharing, I’ve created a document that I will update regularly as I get new ideas. And I want to give it to you.
I remember Elizabeth Gilbert sharing a story about how ideas stick around for a while in hopes of being realized, but then sometimes move on to someone new. I want these ideas I’ve had to be shared so that the “right” artist finds them and starts sharing their story with the world.
Currently the topics that most come to mind relate to textile art and activism. I hope you enjoy the document, which is linked below this video. I’ve created it to be a free google doc for your personal review.
This resource can help every artist archetype, but may be most resonant with Activated Artists and Many Media Explorers who want to work in a series to dig deeper into uncovering unique artist voice. If you want to know your artist archetype, be sure to take my free quiz linked below this video.
As always, I want to create valuable, actionable resources to help you be your best artist. IF you are looking for different content, or want to offer me feedback on what I write to you inside our community here, I’m listening!
Thanks for watching and I’ll see you here next time on Artist Strong.
