In today’s video I’m looking at work by community member Jennifer. We discuss:
- Why you should focus on negative space in your art,
- A way to use image references to help inform your art but also not dictate your idea,
- The dangers of white space in your art (and what do to about it), and lastly,
- Why you should stop outlining everything and what to do instead.
If you find this kind of feedback helpful, be sure to sign up for my free mini class called Drawing Drills to get tips on improving your art. Sign up details are below.
Hello Carrie I think you are absolutely right about the negative space and the outline, I will put it in practice from now on sincerely. Paul Mejia
Thanks Paul for watching!
Carrie,
Your critique of Jennifer’s lion/wolf was spot on. I think she needs to concentrate on basic shapes, and how shadow areas can define certain parts of her drawings, as you pointed out.
I can’t believe how Texas was so totally unprepared for a bit of snow and cold weather! The last few years have made it perfectly clear how terrible and ill prepared our government is to help on any number of levels. I hope things change for the better soon and wish you and your fellow Texans all the best.
Been very busy scribbling away … took a fine colored pencil course with Longwood Gardens recently and really enjoyed it.
Stay well and keep up the great work helping fellow artists.
Kind regards!
Bill Warda
Bill thank you so much!
And yes – Texas – whoa. Sigh. Thankfully the weather is a lot better. Local plumbers now have their hands full with all of the burst pipes. We saw the effects of that on our morning walk today, too.
Your colored pencil course sounds great. I really appreciate you taking the time to share here.
Warmly,
Carrie
Wonderful critique. There’s a lot of delicious “food for thought “ in this short video. I am so glad you and your family are doing well. I have been lighting a candle and sending positive thoughts to all of you in Texas.
